AMS‘s computer lab is used to empower
students to maximize their personal, creative and academic
potential, in order to become lifelong learners and responsible
world citizens. This
learning environment includes 31 computers running XP Professional,
with Microsoft Office 2003 and other educational software, a
document camera, projector, speakers, a variety of digital cameras
and camcorders, a microphone, scanner and printers. Here, we have engaging learning
experiences that provide all students the opportunity to acquire
the knowledge and skills necessary to experience post secondary
success, meet personal goals, and become productive community
members.
The computer lab is available to all classes on a sign-up
basis, and to individual students on a space available
basis. The lab is
staffed with a computer science professional that, with
reinforcement from the
Edmonds
School District (ESD) Technology Department, supports
technology throughout the school.
All teachers are equipped with laptop computers and presentation
equipment, and many classrooms are equipped with computers for
student use. All computers are connected to the district
network and the internet, linking AMS to a world of resources.

Patch Thursdays
At the end of your work day
every Thursday:
- Make
sure every computer is plugged into AC power
- Make
sure every computer is connected to the network via a network cord
or wireless
- Click
“Start” then “Shutdown” and choose
“Restart”
- Let
the machine reboot and leave the machine at the
“logon” screen.
- It’s okay to turn your monitors off to save
energy.
- If
you use a laptop and, take it off the district network every day,
then please choose at least one Thursday night a month to leave the
laptop at work connected.
Please DO NOT put your
computers to sleep or let them hibernate. This will keep them
from getting their updates.
- On
laptops that happens when you hit the Fn + F3 Keys
simultaneously. Don’t do this on Patch
Thursday!
- On
Desktops it’s an option when you click on Shutdown.
Don’t do this on Patch Thursday!
Laptops not on AC power will eventually
automatically sleep, hibernate or consume their entire battery
charge. Don’t do this on Patch Thursday! Make
sure they’re plugged into power!
Note: If you miss an update
on Thursday, you catch-up the following Thursday.
Technology Resource Reservations
We use an Outlook Public
Calendar as our reservation method for the computer lab and laptop
cart. To access the calendar, you need to have your Outlook
settings show the Folder List. With folders displayed, click
on the plus sign next to “Public Folders” to expand the
directory, then expand "All Public Folders," then "Alderwood
Middle School." Calendar "Lab A" is for the computer
lab, and "Laptop Cart" is for the mobile cart of 15
laptops.
Camera Equipment Usage
Camera
equipment can be checked out from the library.
Internet Access
Students no longer need their student
ID card to access the internet.
Deep Freeze on
PCs
The application “Deep Freeze” is installed on the
computers in the lab, to prevent destructive and
unwanted modifications. When a PC
is rebooted, any changes that were made to the system, and
any data that was saved on the hard drive, are deleted,
and Deep Freeze restores the computer to its proper
state. However, there is one area that is not subject to the
freeze/restore process. It is called the “Thaw
area” and it is mapped as drive T. Anything
saved on the PC in the "Thaw Area" will remain after a
reboot.

Procedures
The Computer
Lab A reservation schedule is on an Outlook calender in the
Public Folder called Alderwood Middle
School.
>
Navigation Directions: Open Outlook
- Show Folder
List - Open Public
Folders – All Public Folders – Alderwood Middle School
– Lab A.
Add your
reservation to this schedule by creating an appointment for the
time of your reservation. Include period and teacher
name.
Lab reservations should not be made more than two weeks in advance,
in order to give all teacher's equal opportunity to use the
lab.
Accompany
your class to
the computer lab at the time of your reservation.
If you would
like for Ms. Malan to give a presentation or lesson
during your reserved time, send an Outlook invitation to her, from
the appointment, by clicking on "Invite Attendees".
You may send
students to work in the computer lab at any time when it is not
reserved for a class, as long as there is an adult to
supervise the students. Be sure that Ms. Malan, or another
teacher, is in the computer lab, before you send students there to
work.
If it is
reserved for a class, students may
work/type as long as it’s okay with the teacher that
is using the lab and if there are
extra computers available.
Students may use any extra computers as long as they don’t
disrupt the class.
Classroom
behavior is expected in the computer lab, with the addition of the
no food, drink or gum rule. Students may be sent back to
class due to misbehavior.
Ms.
Malan frequently leaves the computer lab to provide technical
assistance elsewhere in the school. If she is not in the
computer lab, she will leave a note on the board, by the door,
indicating her location.

Printing
We are asking all
staff to please print to the new copiers AM-Copier-1
or AM-Copier-2 instead of the laser copiers (LabA,
etc). The cost effectiveness of using the copier as a printer
vs. a laser jet printer…it costs 2 cents per page to print to
the copier. If you consider that you will get a ½ cent
credit for paper, then the cost is 1.5 cents. You can duplex,
using the copier, reducing the cost to print 2 pages to 2.5 cents
(without paper).
On the other hand, most laser
printers cannot print on both sides of the page. And they
cost about 2-3 cents per page for toner. So, the cost to
print 2 pages is around 5 cents (without paper). This may
seem like a small difference, but if you print a
2 page document,
for 30 students,
in 5 periods,
everyday for 175
days, then, the
2.5 cents becomes…. $656.25!
Also you have the capability sending
your copies directly to the printshop, you probably only need to do
this if you need to print in color or are making special books or
something like that but here is the directions for
that.
As for sending a job to the
Printshop from your computer….
For the best results,
email your document to “printjobs”
-
Include your 5-digit key
code, so they know who to bill
-
Please let me (Lisa
Omdahl) know if you send a job so that I can make sure to bill your
dept.
-
Attach your file (Word
document, Publisher, etc.)
-
Tell them how many
copies, if you want it stapled, collated, etc.
-
We are working on a form
to collect this information, but it is not ready yet
If you do not have the
originals in an electronic format, you can scan to the
Printshop
-
This feature is being
tested by a school now and will be announced in early
December
-
You would complete a
form (PS-11), with information like your key code, # of copies,
etc.
-
You would then include
it as the top sheet of the documents you want copied
-
You would use either of
the 2 new copier to scan it to the Printshop dropbox
-
They pick it up from
there and complete the job and send it back to you via
inter-district mail
With the new technology we will not
be replacing any of the laser printers or small printers throughout
the building. So please start taking advantage of the new
copiers.

FAQ
Q: How do I fix the Larson Math error, "The program files are
missing..."? A:
In order to use Larson math, you must be logged into the MISO
network and connected to the application server am-2.
When you log on in a room that is setup for Larson use, the
computer's login script should point you to the Larson
application, but if that doesn't work right, you can manually
map the drive as follows:
Right
click on
My Computer
and select
Explore.
Click on the menu option
Tools,
then
Map Network Drive...
Select
Drive L
from the drop-down menu.
Type
\\am-2\Larson
in the
Folder
field.
Leave the check-mark in the box next to
Reconnect at logon
Click on the
Finish
button.
Q: How do I get guest account network access? A: The
Edmonds wireless network was designed to securely support official
District personnel and equipment via authentication against the
District's Active Directory.
Technology recognized the need to provide some mechanism to
allow temporary wireless access for visitors, vendors, and
volunteers. For these users we created an "edmonds_guest" account
with rotating passwords that any staff member with a MISO account
can use to give these types of individuals temporary access to the
Edmonds wireless network.
This was in no way designed to allow students to connect with
their personally owned notebooks which we believe to carry a much
higher risk to the network and greater opportunity for abuse. Guest
access for students is NOT required if they are using a District
supplied workstation.
District personnel can obtain the current "edmonds_guest"
password by accessing the page https://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/technology/wireless/
This page requires a MISO login ie: "MISO\username" with the
correct password and includes the current edmonds_guest password,
basic instructions, and links to more detailed printable
instructions.
Previous users of the guest wireless credentials should note
that the username has changed from “guest” to
“edmonds_guest”, and that the password is now changing
every 24 hours.
Q: Who supports the new levy
computers? A: Users call Help Desk
(HD) first (x7333).
If field/school tech can investigate that day or the next, HD
assigns to tech.
If user opts to bring laptop to Help Desk, OK; HD/Unisys
resolves.
Otherwise, Help Desk calls Tim, Lori, or Wayne to
investigate.
Q: How do I initiate
under-warranty Gateway computer repairs for new teacher laptops,
mobile lab laptops, and desktops?
A: Teachers and staff are asked to call
7333 to initiate under-warranty Gateway computer
repairs.
Q: Video shows up on my laptop screen, but
not on the projected image. What's
wrong? A: This is
usually caused by the display properties on the laptop.
Follow the instructions below to set the display to Theater
Mode:
-
Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties (or open
Control Panel, and then open Display)
-
Click the Settings tab
-
Click the Advanced button
-
Click the Overlay tab (if you do not have an Overlay tab,
make sure you have a yellow dot M460—these directions only
apply to those. If you do have a yellow dot M460, or want help
determining if you do, please call the Help Desk at
7333)
-
If a message opens, click OK
-
Check the box for Theater Mode
-
Click OK
-
Click OK
