Welcome to Brier Terrace
English Classes

TO: All Humanities Families and Students of BTMS             DATE: November 13, 2009

RE: The Read-In                                                                        FROM: BTMS Humanities Teachers

As a reward for the students and as part of Brier Terrace Middle School’s goal to create life long readers, there will be a Read-in on Wednesday, November 25, 2009.

DATE: Wednesday, November 25, 2009                 WHAT: A Read-in

WHEN & WHERE: In Humanities classrooms during regular class time.

The following guidelines will apply to all participants:
What to bring:  Blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. The condition is that there will be only one person per bag or blanket. Any items brought to school by bus must be in a bag. No loose items.    Any paraphernalia must be dropped off for storage in the student’s Humanities classroom on the morning of the 25th by 7:55 AM unless your equipment will be dropped off just prior to your time slot and picked up by 2:30 PM on the same date. We don’t want to disrupt any other classrooms with extra baggage.
What we can read: Books, books, or books. Magazines will be allowed only if approved by the teacher.   Sorry, but there are too many magazines out there that are not considered appropriate reading material for school. Picture book and novels are welcome, but no comic books.
What we can’t do: Talk, build forts, be disruptive. As always, all school rules apply. Any student not in compliance will be given the opportunity to do an alternate assignment.
What we can wear: Sweats, T-shirts, sweat shirts. Slippers may be brought to school, but not worn to school and they must have a sole. If any clothing is deemed inappropriate, school guidelines will go into effect (see student handbook).
What we can eat: The students will be allowed to bring munchies. Drinks, as always, must be in resealable, non-breakable drinking vessels. No glass, no open containers.
Who is responsible: As any other school day, a staff member will be with students at all times. This is not a free day, but rather a day to celebrate and enjoy the power of literature. The students will be responsible for setting up and cleaning up the room.
As always, please feel free to contact your Humanities teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Many of your students are well on there way to reaching their reading goals for the year. This day will give all students the opportunity to advance even further towards this goal.

Sincerely,

Ann Kellett

Make sure you have a notebook for your journal writing. Any notebook is fine. In this class you will need paper, pencils, scissors, erasers, colored pencils, and highlighters in pink, yellow and green.
