Ms. Knutzen’s 8th Grade Math

Alderwood Middle School

Syllabus 2016-2017

What are we going to learn?

We will be using a curriculum called Glencoe Math. It is a consumable textbook (students are able to write in it), so students will be required to keep their book with them throughout the year. We will be covering a variety of math topics throughout the year, including Expressions and Equations, Functions, The Number SystemGeometry and Statistics and Probability. We will also be focusing on eight Mathematical Practices that are identified in the Common Core State Standards.

What materials do we need?

Students are expected to come to class prepared with the following items EVERY DAY:

  • Composition Notebook (preferably graph paper, but regular paper is okay)
  • Sharpened pencils with erasers
  • Charged Chromebook
  • Math Textbook

Do we have homework? What if it is late?

  • Homework will be assigned most days. There will be no homework on Fridays unless the student needs to make up missing work.
  • Homework is due the day after it is assigned. If they do not turn their homework in on the due date they will be expected to stay at study club to complete it.
  • It is suggested that students who have been absent attend Study Club or Mustang Success to catch up on missed lessons. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed.
  • I accept late homework until the date of the corresponding chapter test. After the chapter test is given, late homework will not be accepted.
  • I do not accept incomplete assignments. Incomplete assignments will be returned to the student and will need to be completed in order to receive any credit.

What about Tests?

  • Students will have quizzes, chapter tests and possibly unit tests throughout the year.
  • If a student is absent for a quiz or test, it is their responsibility to make arrangements to complete it in a timely manner.
  • Quiz/Test corrections can be completed for partial credit.
  • Some tests can be retaken under certain circumstances but must be arranged with the teacher. The student may be required to complete extra practice prior to retaking the test.
