Aug/Sept 2007 COUGAR NEWS=20
PRINCIPAL=92S MESSAGE

Dear CPM Families,=20

We are about to begin a wonderful journey together. =93Pathways to =
Success=94 is=20
the selected theme for the year and our current focus is on preparing an =
awesome=20
and engaging educational experience for every student at College Place =
Middle=20
School. Summer construction has caused a change in our orientation =
process.=20
The next page explains the amended plan for orientation activities. The =
fi rst day=20
of school will include orientation activities for 7th grade students and =
new 8th=20
graders.=20

An exciting new program begins this year. =93Cougar Connections=94 will =
meet third=20
period. This advisory/advocacy class is designed to connect students =
with one=20
staff and other students, and promote guidelines, procedures and =
discussions that=20
create pathways to success for all. School-wide bimonthly themes will =
guide=20
weekly activities and monthly grade level assemblies. A staff advisory =
group has=20
been meeting this summer to plan the implementation phase which will =
focus on=20
personalizing the school experience as well as strategies for success.=20

Each parent=92s involvement in their student=92s education is important! =
Remember=20
that middle school is a transitional time from elementary to high =
school. It is=20
so very important to stay involved in school and in your student=92s =
life. There=20
will be many different opportunities to volunteer this year. Becoming =
involved=20
in Parent Club is one way to provide support. Parents and staff working =
together=20
make CPM such a great place to learn!=20

Warm Regards,=20

Dear College Place Families,=20

Change provides opportunities for fresh starts and=20
new beginnings. One change this year at College=20
Place Middle School is Mr. Baumgartner has accepted a position as an =
elementary principal in the=20
district and I have the wonderful opportunity to=20
join the College Place Middle School staff. I am very=20
excited and looking forward to a great year of getting to know the =
students, families, and staff here at=20
College Place.=20

A little bit about myself... I have spent the last eleven=20
years as a middle school teacher in the Marysville=20
School District. I recently graduated from Seattle=20
Pacific University with a Master.s Degree in=20
Educational Leadership and am very excited for=20
the opportunity to begin my administrative career=20
at College Place Middle School. Outside of school I=20
enjoy attending local sporting events, traveling, and=20
spending time with my family.=20

Enjoy the rest of your summer activities with=20
families and friends. I can=92.t wait for September 4th!=20

Sincerely,=20

Improvement Project

Adding reinforcements to the=20
buildings to match the existing structure is only part of the=20
work being done this summer=20
at CPM by Bayley Construction. Bayley completed similar=20
work at Lynnwood and Brier=20
Elementary last summer. Eighty percent of the work is=20
to be performed on the exterior of the buildings where=20
new steel supports and new soffits will be the most=20
visible enhancements. The contractor is on schedule=20
for this extensive project.=20
Although the project is expected to be completed by=20
mid-October, between September 4 and mid-October=20
the contractor will work after school hours.=20

What is ASB?

The College Place Middle School ASB officers are=20
excited to have a great start to the 2007-2008 school=20
year. In case you didn=92t know, ASB stands for Associ
ated Student Body and every student at CPM is a=20
member. Your ASB is responsible for organizing spirit=20
week, dances, and other activities around the school.=20
We would love your help. Interested students can get=20
involved by becoming a classroom representative, a=20
member of the dance committee, helping with spirit=20
week, and by purchasing an ASB card. Parents who=20
are interested can support our activities as volunteers=20
for different events. We are looking forward to a great=20
year full of fun activities.=20

This year=92s officers are:=20
Estella Jung, Lucy Tibbits, Sara Salter, Angela Hilbert,=20
Wendy Chen, and Grace Carlson.=20

We are all looking forward to seeing you on=20
September 4th. Remember to buy your ASB card.=20
You will need to have an ASB card to play sports and=20
be members of school clubs and as an added bonus=20
you also get discounted tickets into all dances.

Counselor Corner=20

Dear Parent(s)=20

Your child is about to begin their two-year middle school sojourn. I use =
the word =93sojourn=94 because =96 contrary to=20
what students may believe - middle school is a very short period in =
their education. However, this transition has=20
a tremendous impact on their lives as they move from elementary school =
and into the secondary grade levels.=20
You may have already noticed some changes in your child. As you strive =
to teach your child to become a=20
responsible adult, you may find that you actually spend less time with =
him/her, as they seem to focus more on=20
their friends.=20
I recommend the following strategies to assist with this transition:=20

Use the after school Study Clubs offered at CPM
Encourage your child to read, read, read
Contact your student=92s teachers to discuss your concerns
Request weekly progress reports (go to the counseling office for this)
Contact the counseling office to arrange a parent, teacher, student =
conference
Help you child organize their workload so they don=92t become =
overwhelmed and discourage

Most importantly, I encourage you to stay close to your child during =
this huge transition period in their lives. They=20
will need your help =96 whether they ask for it, or not- navigating =
their new academic environment and the desire=20
to socialize with other students. I am proud to become a member of your =
child=92s support team and look forward=20
to working with you over the next two years. If you have any other =
concerns or issues, please feel free to call me=20
at 425.431.7313, extension 4203.=20

From PARENT CLUB=20

I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy and enjoying your summer =
break. My name is Shelly Harris=20
and I am your new CPM Parent Club President. The first day of school is =
not too far away and although I=20
am enjoying summer and having my kids home, I am also very excited about =
the up coming year at CPM.=20

The Parent Club is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved, =
meet new families, and to stay=20
connected with your middle schooler. We will have many events this =
coming school year that will=20
require parent volunteers, so please get involved if your schedule =
permits.=20

You can email me at shellyaharris@yahoo.com or call me at 206.227.9240 =
if you would like to be placed=20
on a volunteer list or if you have any questions.=20

I can=92t wait to meet you and your kids as we experience middle school =
together. Enjoy the rest of your=20
summer and I will see you in September.=20

Very truly yours,=20
