Important Class Norms
Citizenship - Students are expected to engage in
our "learning community", where every student is unique and
every student is respected for what they bring to our
classroom.
Assumptions - Students are expected to be
personally responsible for their learning. This means that students
should be present in class every day, attempt every
assignment, and seek help whenever clarification is necessary
to complete an assignment with understanding.
Safety - Students are expected to conduct
themselves in a safe matter during class and especially during
labs. In order to participate in labs, each student will sign
the Science Lab Safety Agreement, a copy of which is on the
documents page of this website.
Electronics -
No electronic
devises,
other than a basic calculator, will be permitted in class. Cell
phones, music headsets, games, etc will be confiscated and must be
collected by a parent or guardian.
Classwork / homework
Late work will be accepted in the event of an excused absence. If a
student is absent on the day an assignment is due, they must turn
in the assignment the first day of their return to school. If a
student misses school on the day an assignment is given, they
should work with the teacher to decide a timeline for turning it
in. If a student does not have their assignment on the day it is
due, they can turn it in within one week. The teacher will reduce
the score by 10% for the late assignment. After one week the
assignment will not be accepted.
Absences - Students are expected to be in school and
in class daily. Punctual attendance is the first requirement for
success both here and in the workplace. A large part of learning
takes place during class laboratories, activities, discussions, and
participation. This class uses instructional methods that require
positive participation and if students are absent, they miss out on
that learning. Some labs, demonstrations, and discussions cannot be
made up or replicated because of limited resources.
Daily participation is necessary for successful acquisition of
necessary skills. Absences directly impact a student’s
progress toward learning goals of the course and therefore the
student's grade in the course.
Students are responsible for any work missed
due to an absence. Many assignments are available on the documents
page of this website.
Grades - Students and their families should check
student grades on a weekly basis. The online gradebook at
Skyward is updated approximately every other week.
ENERGY AND
ENVIRONMENT under
construction...
The following pages are a resource for students
that are concerned about our environment. The information that
follows is particularly focused on energy
consumption. Suggested topics for research are followed by
links and other resources that students may find useful. These
pages will be continually be updated over the coming months. Please
feel free to make suggestions.
Our search for and consumption of energy has a huge impact on
global relations and the environment. The coming decades will
likely see a significant shift in how people obtain and use
energy. If you are thinking about a career...think science and
engineering. Expect to see an increase in hiring and salaries
in jobs related in the energy field.
