Welcome to 7th grade science with
Mrs. Stansberry. Our units of study this year include Cells,
DNA/Genetics, Ecology, Evolution, Human Body Systems, Weather and
Water and (hopefully) Bioengineering.
During the Cells/DNA/Genetics unit we study the 5
kingdoms of life: protist, plant, animal, fungi and bacteria.
We learn about cells and their structure and use microscopes to see
living cells. We learn how genes are passed through generations and
apply that to the environment and evolution and how living things
have changed over time.
Human Body Systems include the study of the muscular, skeletal,
circulatory, respiration and digestive systems.
Weather and Water unit introduces students to the Earth's
atmosphere, weather and water, using physical science
properties.
The Bioengineering unit is in partnership with the University of
Washington Engineered Biomaterials department. Students learn
how materials are made to help enhance or replace worn or diseased
body parts.
School Success Tips for Parents and
Students: Parents: 1.
Make sure that your student has a quiet focused place to study in
the house.
2. Establish a routine time and place to do 1-2
hours of homework each night.
3. All students should be reading at least 30 minutes
every night at home.
4. Be Involved! Ask lots of questions, ask to see
assignments, check on grades!
5. Planners: Your student should be writing down
all their assignments every day in
their planner. Ask to see
it so you can know what they are doing (or not doing!).
6. Contact me if you have any concerns about your
student's progress.
Students:
1. Come to science class every day on time (NO
TARDIES!)
2. Have the following materials every day in
class: Pencils/pens, paper, ruler,
assignments, good attitude.
3. Stay focused on your work, be respect of self
and others, follow all lab saftey
guidelines, and do your best!
4. Stay healthy, get exercise, lots of sleep, eat a
good breakfast!
