Reading
In reading this year, we will look at understanding and applying strategies that good readers use to help them understand the text. Our focus is on using the skills and strategies to help our work in areas of science and social studies. We will also share our expereinces as readers and writers by talking about our favorites.

Math
As  our school year begins, we will be reviewing basic ideas about number sense, and discussing ideas such as place value and mental math. We will develop structures for using math tools, as well as formats for talking and writing about math understanding.
* Math can be a confusing place for parents trying to help students. Don't be shy, math is taught differently at different times, in different places - all ways are okay. But feel free to ask me questions about how we teach it here and now!

Science
We start this year by learning to ask lots of questions, learning to think like a scientist. As we ask questions, we are also looking at what we know and understand about the process of doing science.  Our main topics are Earth History, biological diversity, and simple machines. All students will participate in science fair by creating a project and sharing it with the class.

Social Studies
Social studies will include investigations of some ancient civilizations, including Egypt and Greece.  We will also explore current events and family components, as a way of building active citizens and encouraging family conversations.

Writing
Our writing skills will be developed and schowcased in many projects throughout the year. We will practice notetaking (finding the main idea), writing orgainzed paragraphs and essays, and improve writing skills for a variety of pruposes. Look for book publishing assignments as a choice for "show what you know" final projects as well.
